OVER THE WEEKEND, UK comedian Jason Manford was in Ireland and laid into the No posters, posting an image on his Facebook page that quickly went super viral.
Last night, fellow comedian Adam Hills shared Manford’s image and revealed that he in fact knows the couple whose image is used in the No posters.
And they are not happy.
Hills explained that the couple featured in the image are friends of his wife and, as the photo is a stock image, they have no control over how or where it is used.
The comedian stated that the couple in question are “appalled” at how their picture has been used by the organisation Mothers and Fathers Matter and assured Irish people that they are in fact in favour of marriage equality.
As he put it:
Regardless of how you feel about the vote – what a weird, horrible, ridiculous world we live in, in which a loving, caring, open-minded family unit can be used to advertise the very opposite of what that particular family unit believes. If any of my Irish friends see these posters, just know this – the beautiful family on that poster is all for Marriage Equality.
Update: Mothers and Fathers Matter have now released a statement on the photograph. The group said if the couple involved contact them directly,
we will be pleased to demonstrate how use of this photo will help ensure that no child will be deliberately denied of the love of a mother or father.
